Hampden-Sydney College

Prince Edward County – One of the 53 sites along the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail®.  Hampden-Sydney College, the last college formed under the British Crown, has been in continuous operation since it opened in 1775.  During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, the college did not publicly take sides. Some faculty children attended the all-white private school Prince Edward Academy, when all of the county’s public schools were closed to stave off integration. Several Hampden-Sydney students taught children in the Prince Edward Free Schools, which were established for Black students during this period.
