The Beneficial Benevolent Society of Loving Sisters and Brothers of Hampden Sydney
Prince Edward County – One of the 53 sites along the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail®. Established in 1843, most likely by free Black people,
the Beneficial Benevolent Society of the Loving Sisters and Brothers of Hampden Sydney consisted of two mutual benefit groups for African American men and women of the Hampden Sydney district of Prince Edward County. When the schools were closed in Prince Edward County, this meeting hall became a “training center” for the disenfranchised African American children of the district.
